Homework is seen as a valuable extension to the learning that occurs in the classroom – a time when the pupil can, in the quiet of the home, go over work he or she may need to practice. The actual content and amount set are outlined in the Homework Policy and is a set time for each year group. Typically, it might be a number of pages to read from the child’s “reader” in the company of a listening and interested adult. On the other hand, it could be a page from our maths scheme.
The time spent over homework is at the discretion of the parent. Consideration must however, be given to the fact that one child will do in 20 minutes what another will do in an hour. Therefore common sense has to be exercised and consideration given to the amount of effort the child actually applies. Parents are asked to take an active interest in their child’s homework.
We also attach a great deal of importance to the well-established fact that young children who are read to, are heard to read and are surrounded by books naturally develop to become good readers and writers.
