Background and Philosophy

Pointers was established by Miss Muriel and Miss Dela Pointer in 1950. It is housed in a large, double-fronted, detached Victorian house in Stratheden Road, Blackheath, a pleasant residential area adjacent to the Heath. To the rear of the building there is a hard surface, all-weather playground complete with jungle gym, where pupils can enjoy a variety of physical pursuits and games.

Pointers has always had an outstanding reputation as a pre-preparatory and preparatory school for boys and girls between the ages of three and eleven. It has firmly established itself as a traditional, yet exciting school where parents from many backgrounds send their children.

The school’s academic and personal development aims and methods are set out in some detail on this website. Central to our ethos and all our activities is the Christian faith, and all children at Pointers are taught this. Nevertheless we recognise that children should learn about the variety of belief systems that exist in our society and therefore all pupils receive some instruction in the other main world religions.

The school is Evangelical in outlook, but nondenominational in practice. All children attend a daily assembly which is usually an exciting gathering of the school where all children participate in corporate Christian worship and prayers. Awards are given, news heard, stories told, and twice a term each class stages its own assembly. The major Christian festivals are celebrated and are not only wonderful occasions for dramatic expression but also for our young children to develop their own faith.

Emphasis in the school is thus on the development of Christian values, i.e. a caring and considerate attitude to others, good manners, self-discipline, service to the community and the pursuit of excellence. All this, of course, has a direct bearing on our curriculum design.

Helping a child develop with all or some of these qualities is very difficult without the cooperation of the parents concerned. It is because of the fundamental importance of the home that we encourage parents to take an interest in all facets of school life. Pointers also has a very active and productive Parents’ Association.
