Music
Pointers place a high value on music and each class has a weekly music lesson where children enjoy ‘hands on’ experience with a wide range of instruments under a professional music teacher. Pupils are taught to sing songs from memory, play simple pieces with tuned and untuned instruments and sing unison songs. They also learn to improvise musical patterns, use sounds to create musical effects, and record their compositions using symbols, and later on using notation. The recorder is taught in class from Year 2.
Older children are encouraged to develop their abilities and skills further, and perhaps to rehearse and present their own projects and performances. Furthermore, a number of specialist music teachers visit the school every week to give private tuition on the piano, recorder, flute, clarinet, guitar, drums and voice. Violin and cello tuition can also be arranged.
The choir and chamber choir regularly perform in school concerts and there is a weekly recorder club for ensemble playing.
We have been very fortunate in being able to use the facilities of St John’s Church, Blackheath, for end-of-term concerts, which include recitation, drama and music.
